April 2013 news

March 25th, 2013 by Kevin

Hey guys- did ya miss me?

So I’ve been busy getting married and assorted, exciting, life-changing things, so I haven’t been able to sit down and update the blog section of this page in awhile. According the post below, it’s been three months since I posted last. In that time, I’ve also been doing tee and sticker design work for Reel Crazy, a Galveston-based saltwater lifestyle company. Check them out if you’re into fishing or just cool gear. Here are a few of the designs I’ve put together for their current Summer line:

We’ll also be posting up the new Summer 2013 line- new tshirt, tank and snapback designs, along with limited edition prints and original art. Hope you’re ready ; )

All you have to do is enter XMAS when you get ready to check out to receive your Christmas today. Thanks again for your support through out the year, whether it’s been through buying merchandise through the store or stopping by one of the art shows this Fall- you guys are AWESOME – Happy Holidays!

I’m back- did you miss me? Probably not, unless you’re a Bulgarian Cialis spammer- I’m starting to wonder if all my traffic is spam and I’m writing this completely for myself. But, in the outside chance that actual people that speak English and are interested in my art DO read this blog, I have something pretty cool coming up in less than nine days. Normally, I’d be talking about my birthday here, but this is something even more awesomer, although anyone wanting to celebrate the day of my birth may do so by purchasing a tshirt or three from the Store

Broken Window Theory - finished by FallingApartArt

Broken Window Theory - finished by FallingApartArt

Here is the complete “Broken Window Theory”, my seven day art project reflecting ideas about the Broken Window crime theory, vandalism, and public art. The painting was executed with Montana spraypaint on a vintage 32×32 wooden-framed window. Next step is inserting some eye screws in the back and wiring it to be hung on a wall.

Next up for FallingApartArt is our booth at the EMERGE! ATX graffiti art show coming up Saturday, October 6th at the Pine Street Station in Austin, Texas. It’s the biggest graffiti/ b-boy event of the year here in town and features the best in Texas aerosol art. Live painting, b-boying, MCing, and DJing- bringing all the elements to you in one place. Here’s the link to the official Facebook page with more information and the lineup. Hope to see you there- I’ll have the SLOKEXFallingApartArt tees, the new Temple of the Jaguar tees, and more. Stop by and say hello!

Portfolio: Broken Window Theory

Broken Window Theory phase1 by FallingApartArt

Driving through the neighborhood this week, I spotted a vintage wood framed window leaning against the curb, the victim of a broken pane in the upper right corner. Pretty much as soon as I saw it, the my creative wheels started turning. I waited until I was sure it was trash and scooped it up, intent on using it for my next project. The first idea that came to mind was the the Broken Window Theory, a criminological theory that states that states that maintaining and monitoring urban environments in a well-ordered condition may stop further vandalism and escalation into more serious crime. The broken windows theory was first introduced by social scientists James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling in their article titled “Broken Windows”.The title of the article comes from the following example:

“Consider a building with a few broken windows. If the windows are not repaired, the tendency is for vandals to break a few more windows. Eventually, they may even break into the building, and if it’s unoccupied, perhaps become squatters or light fires inside. Or consider a sidewalk. Some litter accumulates. Soon, more litter accumulates. Eventually, people even start leaving bags of trash from take-out restaurants there or breaking into cars.”

So I decided to take my broken window and use it as a statement on the life cycle of graffiti. I also chose to leave the broken pane untouched/ unpainted, as I believe the removal of graffiti fails to address the underlying themes that motivate street art in the first place. Each day for a week, I’m painting a new “throw up” (two color quick bubble tag) on the back of the window and hitting it with carb cleaner (remover). As I’ve gone through three layers now, the original layers have degraded and I expect the process to continue. The only manipulation of the paint in the removal process is via the carb cleaner spray, mirroring the application of the paint in the first place. I decided to post the progress so far; On Monday of next week, I’ll post the completed process of seven days. Thanks for looking!

During all the craziness of getting the art show together, I was able to take some time over the Labor Day weekend to paint this. I was experimenting with the color brown in this, going for a muted, more traditional look. I’m also working in more natural highlights on things like the rose petals and the inside of the cobra hood. I’m really making an effort to try and get more of an illustrated look to my work with more details. I’ve been doing the really basic traditional tattoo flash painting thing for awhile and honestly, I feel like I’m getting bored with it after three years. So we’ll see where this leads me.

I’m also working on getting some pics from the ATX Works! artshow uploaded. It was a great turn out with music by John Gomi, food by Bahn Bahn, and drinks by Vitamin Water and PBR. We also had a booth setup for my limited edition tees:

We still have the new limited edition Temple of the Jaguar and are older tee designs available in our store Buy yours today.

Mindzai and myself will be getting together another show in the next few months, so check back on the blog (or my Facebook page) for the latest news on my painting and art shows. Thanks!

Here’s a peek at the sketch I’m putting together for the ATX Works! Art Show and the Grand Opening of Mindzai Creative’s Austin, TX branch on Friday, August 24 from 7-11pm . The finished painting will be 11×14 and has a lot of influence via 1900s political cartoons and traditional tattoo flash per usual.

I’ll be posting the flyer with artists this week- check back for the list of artists, vendors, and freebies!
