I was waiting for the bus in San Francisco when a wild looking guy crossed in front of oncoming traffic to get to the stop I was sitting at. He had on headphones that were dangling freely and speaking to someone I couldn’t see. He stood outside the bus shelter for a minute and then spoke to me “It looks like she’s about to bite his face.” I looked up to see the poster for the movie “Crazy Stupid Love” that featured Steve Carell and Julianne Moore. I guess the photographer’s direction was something like ‘give me crazy,stupid, love or a combination of the three’ because the pic on the poster features them laughing at something really funny. But I immediately saw what he saw, Moore’s gaping mouth and photoshopped white teeth bearing down toward the side of Carell’s face. Then the bus came, and my schizophrenic muse disappeared into the mass of Chinatown bus riders.
Months later, I was going through ideas for paintings when I thought about the idea that a passionate embrace can look like dinner on the Serengeti with a few choice details added.
